Faculty

Kyrié Carpenter (she/her) is a coach, an age activist, and a co-founder of oldschool.info.  While working as a therapist in long-term care, she had a several clients with a dementia diagnosis. She was shocked that the people she was spending time with did not match up to the ideas she had about older people, especially those living with dementia. Contrary to what she thought was possible, Kyrié was forming meaningful and transformative relationships with people many of whom would never remember her name.  She realized there were a lot of misconceptions about aging and dementia and that they were stopping us from having relationships with each other. Ever since, she has been doing what she can to share the other story about aging and dementia.

Ryan Backer (they/them) is an age activist and a co-founder of oldschool.info. When they were in their early 20’s, they were uncomfortable with how their entire friend group was all people their age, and they decided to do something about it. They started volunteering as a helping hand at the home of a woman in her 80s. The tasks were simple, but the conversations were rich. Soon after, Ryan decided to finish their undergraduate degree in gerontology. It was then that they learned more about society’s segregation of elders and the horrors of elder abuse. Yet again, they decided to do something about it and have been working as an advocate and activist ever since.
